Railway trade unions have decide to withdraw from the strike scheduled to take place tomorrow. Private bus operators and three-wheel drivers are however expected to go ahead with the strike.The Railway Trade Union Alliance decided to withdraw from the strike following discussions held with President Maithripala Sirisena, today at the Parliament’s premises. The Unions had earlier decided to launch a token strike from midnight today with the aim of protecting the rights of employees of the Department of Railways. Passenger bus and three-wheel drivers had announced a strike tomorrow to protest against the new traffic fine. However the President’s office said that before the implementation of the new fine system, the Motor Traffic Act should be amended and the amended Act should be submitted to the Attorney General and to Parliament for its approval.It was also mentioned that traffic rule violations related to excessive speed and overtaking from the left, could be further discussed in the future.
